SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan water polo team split its opening-day games at the Triton Invitational, narrowly falling to Long Beach State, 8-6, before cruising past Santa Clara, 11-6, on Saturday (Feb. 9) at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center.

Senior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) scored five goals on the day, including her second hat trick of the season in the nightcap against Santa Clara. Freshman Ali Thomason (San Rafael, Calif./Marin Catholic HS) also registered a hat trick against the Broncos -- the first goals of her collegiate career -- as part of a four-goal day, while freshman Presley Pender (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) posted one goal and six assists across two matches.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) played the entirety of both games, posting nine saves.

Leading by just one early in the fourth quarter against Santa Clara, the Wolverines scored four unanswered goals -- two by Thomason -- to close out the contest, icing it with a pair in the final two minutes of play.

Michigan hung tight with Long Beach State in the morning contest, trailing by just one at the halftime break, and pressed with three goals in the final quarter, but the 49ers responded with three late goals of their own.

Sophomore Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and Golden scored two goals apiece; Golden tallied both of her markers in the fourth quarter.

The Wolverines will wrap up play at the Triton Invitational with two games tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 10) at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center. U-M will face Cal State East Bay at 10:40 a.m. PST before closing out the tournament against either Loyola Marymount or Cal State Bakersfield at 4 p.m. or 5:20 p.m. PST.
