BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan water polo team split its games at the annual Fluid Four, falling to No. 10 Long Beach State, 11-8, before cruising past Washington & Jefferson, 21-1, on Saturday (Feb. 23) at Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Freshman Barbara Lanier (Lafayette, Calif./Acalanes HS) headlined the Wolverines' offensive efforts with four goals -- all in the nightcap against the Presidents -- while junior Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame HS) and freshman Bryce Beckwith (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis HS) posted hat tricks against Long Beach State and Washington & Jefferson, respectively. Thirteen different Wolverines scored goals in the evening contest.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) posted six saves in the morning contest against the 49ers and split time in goal with freshmen Hayden Green (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) and Nikki Baron (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) against the Presidents. Green posted two saves in the nightcap, while Baron recorded four.
Michigan led 6-0 at the halftime break against the Presidents before exploding for 15 goals in the second half. Lanier scored one goal apiece in the first and second quarters before adding two more in quick succession in the third, completing her four-goal performance with a steal and solo counter attack late in the frame.
Seniors Natalie Naruns (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) and Katie Hazelrigg (Rolling Hills, Calif./Chadwick HS) each tallied their first goals of the season in the third quarter -- the latter on a skip shot that just beat the shot clock in the final 10 seconds of the frame -- while freshman Kirby Kaptur (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township HS) and Katie Allison (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) notched two goals apiece in the fourth for their first collegiate markers.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early advantage in the morning contest against 10th-ranked Long Beach State, scoring the game's first three goals and adding another late in the first quarter to lead 4-2. Nolan registered two of Michigan's first-quarter markers, scoring on an outside shot from the right side midway through the frame before converting on a backhand in the final minute.
Long Beach State held U-M scoreless in the second quarter, surging ahead with a three-goal effort in the frame to hold a narrow 5-4 advantage at the halftime break. Pender evened the score early in the third, using a skip shot to the right side to successfully convert on a five-meter penalty, but the 49ers continued to press, closing out the frame with three more goals to pull away.
Both teams netted three goals in the fourth quarter. Pratt scored twice within a span of a minute early in the frame, converting on a pair of counter attacks, and she completed the hat trick -- her first of the season -- on cross-cage skip shot in the waning minutes.
The Wolverines will take their annual spring break trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, where they will face perennial power Hawaii at 3 p.m. HST on Wednesday, March 6.
