HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan water polo team dropped its spring-break road contest at No. 8 Hawaii, 9-3, on Wednesday evening (March 6) at the Rainbow Wahine's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. U-M held with Hawaii through the opening quarter, before the perennial power pulled away with a four-goal second.
Senior captain Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) snapped a two-game scoring drought with a pair of goals, scoring in the first and fourth quarters, while junior captain Hathaway Moore (Atherton, Calif./Saint Francis HS), in her season debut, registered her first goal of the year in the third.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) played the entirety of the contest in the Wolverine net, earning four saves -- two apiece in the first and third frames.
After a scoreless opening six minutes of the contest, the Rainbow Wahine broke through with back-to-back goals from Monika Eggens, including a 6-on-5 opportunity with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. Golden responded in short time, however, finding the back of the net on the U-M advantage with just one tick remaining.
Eggens completed her hat trick in the opening minute of the second quarter, kicking off a stretch of six straight Hawaii goals that provided the host an 8-1 advantage until late in the third quarter when Moore scored on a 6-on-5 with 26 seconds left in the frame. The teams traded goals in the fourth as Golden netted her second of the game on another 6-of-5 opportunity at the 4:55 mark.
The Wolverines will face Gannon at home next Friday (March 15) at 6 p.m., before the annual Wolverine Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 16-17) at Canham Natatorium.
