POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan water polo team ended its first day of the Red Fox Invitational defeating Iona, 10-7, before dropping a 7-5 decision to Brown on Saturday (March 10) inside McCann Natatorium.
Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) tallied eight goals and five steals over two games. Lauren Colton (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro) registered three goals and Lauren Thatcher (Canyon Lake, Calif./Temescal Canyon) added two.
Goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) protected the cage for the Wolverines in both contests. She recorded the win against Iona, registering seven saves, and followed with a four-block performance against the Bears.
In the late game versus Brown, Michigan trailed 2-0 after the first period. With less than four minutes remaining in the half, Golden put Michigan on the board with back-to-back goals to even the score at two. At the 2:10 mark, Colton's strike gave the Wolverines a 3-2 lead, before Brown's score (1:47) knotted the score at three going into the break.
In the third, Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) put one in the back of the cage to give Michigan a 4-3 edge. The Bears answered back, scoring two to close out the period entering the final frame with a 5-3 lead.
In the final period, Brown added another score early in the quarter, before Thatcher added her only score of the game to close the gap, 6-5. However, Brown's score with 57 seconds swiped the Wolverines' chances to pull out the win.
Against Iona in the early game, the score was tied at the break, 5-5, with Golden recording two scores in the first half. Thatcher tacked on a goal at the 6:15 mark to push the Wolverines up 6-5 at the start of the third. The Gaels then knotted the score at six, before Golden responded, outscoring Iona, 3-1, through the remainder of the period. Golden's last strike of the quarter with one second left gave the Wolverines a 9-7 lead.
In the fourth quarter, U-M held Iona scoreless, while Golden added her final score of the day with 4:25 remaining.
Colton added two goals, scoring each in the first and second quarters. Lauren Dudley (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) scored a goal for the second straight game. Next, Michigan will open day two of the Red Fox Invitational against No. 16 Hartwick at 9:15 a.m. before closing out competition against host Marist at 1 p.m. Both matches are slated for Sunday (March 10) at McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
