POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan water polo team concluded the Red Fox Invitational with a pair of victories Sunday (March 11), garnering a 10-9 overtime conference win over No. 16 Hartwick and ending play with a 10-7 decision against host Marist inside McCann Natatorium. Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) tallied six goals on a combined 10 attempts, including a hat trick in the first game, to lead Michigan's offense.

Lauren Thatcher (Canyon Lake, Calif./Temescal Canyon) chipped in a hat trick in game one, while Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista), Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) and Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) finished the day with two goals each. Golden's eight steals along with Lauren Colton's (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro) six drawn kickouts lifted U-M's defense.

Goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) protected the cage for the Wolverines in both contests, accounting for seven quarters played. She recorded the win in both contests and registered a total of seven saves.

In the Wolverines' first game of the day against Hartwick, Nolan and Thatcher posted their hat tricks after registering goals in the defining moments. Thatcher scored a goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to help Michigan tie the score at seven and force overtime. In the first overtime session, Thatcher and Nolan each plunged in a goal to help U-M gain a 9-7 lead. During the second frame of extra play, the Hawks threatened, scoring two goals, but Nolan's strike split Hartwick's pair to seal the win for the Wolverines.

In the first quarter, the Wolverines jumped on the board first with a goal from Cobb at the 7:04 mark before an ejection gave the Hawks a 6-on-5. Hartwick used the advantage and scored goals at 5:52 and 5:12 in the quarter and added another at 3:56 to stretch the lead 3-1. Golden answered for the Maize and Blue to close the lead, but the Hawks netted a goal with less than a minute remaining to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Michigan responded from a 6-4 deficit at the half, trailing by one on four occasions throughout the final three frames of regulation. U-M tied it up at six with 5:48 left in the fourth behind a score from Nolan. Hartwick answered, and the Wolverines trailed 7-6 with 25 seconds left. However, Thatcher executed her second goal of the game to move the contest in extra play.

Michigan's defense posted 15 steals and three field blocks for the game. Golden's five swipes helped hold Hartwick scoreless in the third period, allowing U-M to close the gap late in the game. Michigan's 3-1 spread in the second half helped record the win.

In the final match of the day against host Marist, the Wolverines kept a slim advantage in the first half. During the first period, both teams answered on the offensive end with U-M picking up scores from Cobb and Katy Feaver (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's) to close out the opening period tied 2-2.

Hathaway Moore (Atherton, Calif./Saint Francis) scored 14 seconds into the second quarter before Elizabeth Watson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) followed with a strike to put Michigan in control, 4-2, with 5:04 left in the half. After a Marist goal, Nolan found the net to give Michigan a 5-3 lead at intermission.

Out the break, Michigan dished out four unanswered scores in the third period with goals from Pratt, Nolan, Claire Ivry (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Lauren Dudley (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) coming off 6-on-5 opportunities. The quarter extended U-M's lead 9-3 going into the last period. U-M gave up three goals in the final minutes, but Pratt's goal in the fourth help secure the win.

Michigan will play six games during its Wolverine Invite next Saturday and Sunday (March 17-18), beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday against Salem International in conference play. All matches are scheduled to take place inside Canham Natatorium.
