ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan water polo team opened its annual Wolverine Invitational with a pair of lopsided victories, defeating Gannon, 17-2, and Mercyhurst, 25-3, on Friday evening (March 15) at Canham Natatorium.
Michigan scored 42 goals in the doubleheader, including a program-best 25 in the nightcap, and 14 different Wolverine players tallied at least one marker. Freshman Barbara Lanier (Lafayette, Calif./Acalanes HS) headlined the offensive efforts with six goals, scoring three goals in each game to up her career hat trick total to three, while junior Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame HS) netted five goals, including a hat trick in the opener against Gannon. The duo also combined for three assists.
Seven players scored hat tricks, including five in the nightcap: junior Lauren Dudley (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS), junior Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland HS), senior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista), freshman Bryce Beckwith (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis HS) and senior Lauren Colton (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro).
All four Wolverine goalkeepers earned playing time in the doubleheader, and all posted at least one save. Senior captain Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) started both contests, tallying six saves through three quarters of play, while freshman Julia Campbell (Naperville, Ill./Central HS ) led the quartet with seven stops through two quarters. Adamson and Campbell also combined for nine assists, including four from Adamson in the nightcap against the Lakers.
After a slow start against Gannon, the Wolverines exploded for eight goals in the second quarter as Pratt sewed up her hat trick with goals early and late in the frame, the latter on a push shot from the left side of the Golden Knight net. Lanier commanded the early portion of the third quarter, netting all three of her goals in the opening 4:10 of the period. Freshman Julia Riemersma (Kentwood, Mich./Kentwood HS) and Dudley closed out the contest with two goals apiece in the second half.
Michigan carried its game-one momentum into the nightcap against Mercyhurst, scoring 10 goals in the first quarter to immediately put the game out of reach. Freshman Presley Pender (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) scored the game's first goal on a five-meter penalty just nine seconds in -- her first of two in the game -- and Nolan closed out the frame with a point-blank shot from the post with four seconds left on the clock.
The Wolverines continue to press and take advantage of several scoring opportunities, netting four goals in the second quarter and five in the third. Lanier closed out her second hat trick with two markers early in the fourth, converting on a reverse shot and another from the post.
Michigan will resume play at the Wolverine Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, March 16), taking on Notre Dame College at 10 a.m. and Siena at 5 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.
