ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 13th-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team dominated its first three foes at the 2012 Wolverine Invitational, outscoring the opposition by a combined 39-5 margin Saturday morning (March 17) at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines defeated Salem International (13-0), Gannon (11-2) and California Lutheran (15-3) in the first of six matches they will play in the tournament.

The Wolverines (12-9) opened play at their home invitational with a commanding 13-0 shutout of CWPA league foe Salem International, the first shutout of the season for U-M. Freshman Ellis O'Connor (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township HS) led the scoring with five goals, netting two each in the second and fourth periods and one in the third. Eight other team members tallied goals in the contest. The goalkeeper trio of senior Tara Brigham (Baytown, Texas/Sterling HS), junior Katie Cutler (Miami, Fla./Gulliver HS) and senior Claire Ivry (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) combined to make 14 saves.

In the morning's second game, the Wolverines posted a dominating 11-2 victory over Gannon in a non-conference game. After leading 3-1 at halftime, Michigan scored six goals in the third period to blow the game wide open. Sophomore Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland HS) scored in the first and second periods and junior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS), the team's leading scorer, tallied a pair for the Wolverines in the high-scoring third period. Senior goalkeeper Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills HS) notched nine saves as Michigan kept its all-time record against Gannon unblemished (18-0).

U-M continued its hot start to the weekend, posting a 15-3 victory over California Lutheran midday. The Wolverines built a 6-2 advantage after the opening eight minutes, and after a scoreless second period, Michigan scored four times in the third period and added five goals in the fourth while allowing just one to the Regals in the second half. Senior Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and sophomore Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame HS) scored four goals and three goals apiece, respectively, with Cobb tallying a hat trick in the first period. Junior goalie Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) played the entire game for the Wolverines, collecting nine saves.

Michigan returns to the Canham Natatorium pool against Siena at 7:15 p.m. for its final match of the day.
