ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan water polo team wrapped up its annual Wolverine Invitational with a 13-0 shutout victory against Grove City on Sunday morning (March 17) at Canham Natatorium. The victory capped a perfect home weekend for the Wolverines.
It was also the 300th career win for head coach Matt Anderson, who improved to 300-116 over his 12 seasons at Michigan.
Nine different Wolverines scored goals in the contest. Freshman Julia Riemersma (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood HS) registered her first collegiate hat trick, while fellow freshmen Bryce Beckwith (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis HS) and Gabriella Serure (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades HS) netted two goals apiece. Senior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) extended her scoring streak to six games, posting one goal and three assists.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) started the contest and earned the victory, but freshmen Nikki Baron (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and Hayden Green (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo HS) posted the majority of Michigan's saves, combining for five stops through the final three quarters. The shutout victory was the first for the Wolverines this season.
Michigan scored the bulk of its goals in the first half, jumping out to a quick 7-0 advantage in the first quarter before adding thee more in the second frame. Beckwith netted the game's first two goals in the opening minute, while Serure scored twice in quick succession in the second, the latter on a one-touch shot in front midway through the frame.
Riemersma scored all three of U-M's second-half tallies in similar style, netting one midway through the third frame before two more late in the fourth. She wrapped up the hat trick with a pair of goals from the post, including one on the rebound, sending the shot to the upper-left corner of the net.
The Wolverines will return to the road next weekend, heading to Tempe, Ariz., for the Sun Devil Invitational. Michigan will open the tournament with games against Colorado State (10 a.m.), Pomona (1 p.m.) and Cal-Baptist (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday (March 23) before closing out against La Verne at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday (March 24) at ASU's Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
