BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan water polo team used a second-half rally and overtime to edge its rival, No. 12 Indiana, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon (March 30) at the Hoosiers' Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Wolverines extended their win streak to 10 straight games and improved to a perfect 3-0 in CWPA Western Division play.
Junior Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland HS) headlined U-M's offensive efforts with her second hat trick of the season, earning two goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-tying marker with 1:40 remaining in regulation. Six other Wolverines tallied one goal apiece. Junior Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame HS) netted the gamewinner on a cross-cage shot late in the first overtime frame.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) was superb in the Wolverine net, posting a career-best 17 saves, including three in overtime to keep IU off the board for the final six minutes of the contest, and assisted on the game-winning goal, feeding Pratt on the left-side counter attack.
Sophomore Lauren Thatcher (Canyon Lake, Calif. Temescal Canyon HS) put the Wolverines on the board first, scoring on the team's first shot of the contest at the 4:37 mark, but Indiana surged back with two goals to carry a 2-1 advantage into the second quarter. Defense stole the show in the scoreless second frame as Adamson and IU goalkeeper Mary Campbell combined for 12 saves to maintain the narrow one-point Hoosier lead at halftime. Nolan and junior Lauren Dudley (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) both registered a key steal late in the frame.
Michigan dominated play early in the third quarter, knotting the score quickly on a counter-attack tally from freshman Bryce Beckwith (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis HS) just 31 seconds into the period. The teams traded goals through the remainder of the quarter as U-M again tied the score on a Nolan reverse shot with 3:18 left. The Wolverines claimed their first lead since the opening quarter just a minute later on a reverse shot in front from senior Lauren Colton's (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro HS). Indiana took advantage of a 6-on-5 situation in the final minute to tie the score at 4-4 entering the fourth quarter.
U-M again struck quickly in the frame. Colton drew a five-minute penalty in front just 18 seconds in, and freshman Presley Pender (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) converted it, scoring on a skip shot. IU scored three goals in the next three minutes -- interrupted by another Nolan reverse shot -- to take a narrow one-goal advantage late in the contest. Nolan evened the score at 7-7 on a one-touch goal in front from a Beckwith right-side pass.
Pratt's winning goal came with 52 seconds remaining in the first overtime frame. Adamson stopped an IU scoring opportunity and fed a long pass to Pratt on the left side. She drove the ball into five-meter range and rocketed a cross-cage shot, which hit the right post and redirected in.
After U-M held the Hoosiers to just one shot in the second overtime, resulting in an Adamson save, the game ended on a steal by senior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) in front of the U-M net. With no shot clock, the Wolverines held the ball to kill the remaining 30 seconds of the contest.
The Wolverines will wrap up regular-season play next weekend, heading to Providence, R.I., for the Brown Bear Invitational. U-M will face Hartwick (11 a.m.) and CSU Bakerfield on Saturday (April 6) before wrapping up play against Arizona State (9:15 a.m.) and host Brown (2 p.m.) on Sunday (April 7). All games will be held at the Brown Bears' Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
