COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The 13th-ranked University of Michigan water polo team closed out the regular season with a 12-7 win over Bucknell before dropping a 10-9 decision at No. 11 Maryland on Saturday (April 7) inside Eppley Recreation Center.
Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) split time in the cage. Adamson picked up the win against Bucknell, registering five stops, and Turner was tagged with the loss to Maryland, finishing with 11 saves.
In game one against Bucknell, Michigan scored on 2 of 3 power plays and nailed both five-meter penalty shots. Defensively, the Wolverines recorded 13 steals, nine field blocks and five drawn kickouts.
Golden led the way with five goals, all in the first half. After trailing, 1-0, in the early minutes, Michigan scored three straight behind Golden and Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville). The Wolverines then outscored the Bison, 4-1, in the second frame, with Golden tallying three more goals and Pratt pitching in one score to give U-M a 7-2 advantage at the half.
In the third period, the Wolverines stretched the lead 10-2 (5:30) after Ryanne O'Donnell (Northbrook, Ill./New Trier) sparked the run, hitting the back of the cage at the 6:46 mark. Bucknell answered on a 3-1 run to close the period, with the Wolverines holding an 11-5 lead entering the last period. To close the final period, O'Donnell netted U-M's final score to split Bucknell's final two scores to end the game.
In the final game on the day for U-M and the top seed of next week's CWPA Western Division Championship on the line, Michigan trailed Maryland six times, including, 5-3, in the second quarter (5:35).
Goals by Golden (1:46) and Nolan (:59) evened the score at five before, Maryland stopped the offensive burst with a score with 37 seconds remaining and the Wolverines trailed 6-5 at intermission. In the third period, both teams volleyed as the score was evened three times. Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) found the back of the cage with seven seconds remaining to draw the score even at 8-all heading into the final frame.
After both teams exchange scores, Nolan capped her third goal of the game to post a 9-9 score with 6:29 remaining. Both teams went scoreless for most of the fourth period. However, two critical turnovers in the final two minutes by Michigan became the difference maker.
Maryland capitalized on the first to make the go-ahead marker, 10-9, with 25 seconds left. Michigan's last opportunity to score was negated by an offensive penalty, giving the Terrapins the ball and the chance to run out the clock.
Next, Michigan will enter the CWPA Western Division Championship on Saturday, April 14, as the No. 3 seed and will meet No. 6 seed Notre Dame (Ohio). The championship will be held April 14-15 in Bloomington, Ind.
