GENEVA, Ohio -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan water polo team split its games on the first day of competition at the CWPA Western Division Championship, falling to No. 15 Indiana, 10-7, in the first round before rebounding with a 20-6 evening win over Notre Dame College on Saturday (April 13) at the SPIRE Institute. The loss to Indiana marked the end to the Wolverines' streak of 11 straight division titles.

Senior Lauren Colton (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro HS) headlined the Wolverines' offensive efforts with five goals on the day, including a hat trick -- her fourth of the season -- against the Hoosiers. Freshman Kelly Martin (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) posted a career-best four goals, adding two assists and three steals against Notre Dame, while five other players posted two-goal performances against the Falcons.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) started both contests, posting seven stops through five quarters of play, including five against the Hoosiers. Freshman Julia Campbell (Naperville, Ill./Central HS) backstopped the bulk of the Notre Dame contest, posting a career-best eight saves.

The Wolverines used a strong first quarter to jump out to an early lead against Indiana. Colton scored both early and late in the frame, providing U-M a narrow one-goal advantage with a long skip-shot marker in the closing minute. The Hoosiers surged ahead with a four-goal second, scoring a pair on 6-on-5 opportunities as part of a 4-for-4 first half.

Colton completed her hat trick early in the third quarter on a cross-cage shot from the left side, while junior Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland HS) tallied her second marker of the game just past the period's halfway point, scoring on a skip shot to the lower right corner. Indiana recorded three goals of its own in the third and added another -- off a five-meter penalty -- in the opening minute of the fourth. Freshman Ali Thomason (San Raquel, Calif./Marin Catholic HS) responded immediately with a cross-cage goal just 16 seconds later. Thomason's goal, however, was the last of the game as the teams held each other scoreless for the final seven minutes of the final quarter.

Michigan boasted big numbers in the first and fourth quarters in the nightcap against the Falcons, scoring seven goals in the opening frame before closing out the contest with six in the last. Senior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) contributed to much of U-M's early offense, netting the game's first marker on a reverse shot 1:25 into the first and registering a pair of assists midway through the period. Her second helper led to the first of Colton's back-to-back goals in a narrow 35-second window.

Martin scored her first goal on skip shot late in the third quarter and completed her first collegiate hat trick with three goals in the fourth. Senior Natalie Naruns (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) registered a pair of quick markers midway through the frame, before Martin closed out U-M scoring with two minutes remaining in regulation.

Michigan will face Gannon in the CWPA Western Division Championship third-place game at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Sunday, April 14) at the SPIRE Institute. The Wolverines defeated Gannon, 17-2, earlier this season at the Wolverine Invitational.
