BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Michigan water polo team snared a pair of CWPA Western Division Player of the Week honors in recognition of their play over U-M's opening weekend, the league announced on Wednesday (Jan. 23). Senior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) was named Player of the Week, while freshman Bryce Beckwith (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis HS) was tabbed the Rookie of the Week award.
Golden contributed eight goals, two assists and 10 steals over the Wolverines' four-game tournament slate at the annual Michigan Kick-Off (Jan. 19-20). She posted four markers in a season-opening 15-9 victory against Colorado State University before taking on pairs of goals against both San Jose State University and San Diego State University.
Her eight goals upped Golden's career tally to 156 and moved her to sixth place among U-M's all-time scoring leaders. Golden holds nine total weekly honors from the league office, earning two previous Player of the Week honors plus three Defensive Player of the Week and three Rookie of the Week accolades.
Beckwith nets her first weekly award after posting four goals in her first collegiate tournament. The Wolverine freshman notched two markers in the season opener against CSU and added single tallies against San Jose State and San Diego State.
The Wolverines will be back in action this weekend with three games against top-10 oppositions. On Friday (Jan. 25), U-M will kick off the trip against top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA champion Stanford (0-0) at 2 p.m. PST at Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto, Calif. The Wolverines will play a pair of games on Saturday (Jan. 26), heading to San Jose, Calif., for a noon PST rematch against No. 9 San Jose State (3-1) at the SJSU Aquatics Center before closing out the trip with a 6 p.m. PST meeting against No. 4 California (1-0) at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, Calif.
