After a two-week layoff, the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan water polo team (4-5) will head back to California to participate in the UC Irvine Invitational. The tournament, hosted by UC Irvine, fields 16 of the top 20 teams ranked in the nation.
The Maize and Blue will open play at the invitational on Friday (Feb. 25) when it faces No. 6 Hawai'i for the second time this season. Depending on the outcome, the Wolverines will either face No. 3 UCLA or No. 17 California State Northridge to conclude day one before meeting two teams on the final day of competition on Sunday (Feb. 26).

In game two on the day, Michigan walked into the break with a 2-2 score against Hawai'i from goals by Golden and Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad).

In last year's season opener, Alison Mantel completed a hat trick in the first period to put the Maize and Blue ahead, 4-1. CSUN pulled back to within one goal midway through the second period but was denied the tying goal. U-M then scored in the final minute to put the Maize and Blue ahead 5-3 at the break.
Kiki Golden dominated a wild third period, scoring three times, including twice with an extra attacker. Michigan pushed the score 10-7 with a breakaway goal with 48 seconds to go and U-M snagged an errant pass to score the 11th marker with two seconds remaining in the third. Three different Wolverines scored in the fourth period.

Michigan looked to avenge a loss to No. 4 UCLA earlier this season. knotting the score twice in the first half, when Kiki Golden and Meagan Cobb goals made it 2-2. Trailing by one in the second quarter, Lauren Colton hit a shot to draw the score even, 3-3. UCLA retaliated with seven unanswered goals in the final two frames to extend the lead and secure the win in the Sanford Invitational.
AT THE INVITATIONAL
Michigan has participated in the UC Irvine Invitational before the tournament's name was changed from the Anteater Invitational. The Wolverines hold a 5-11 record in the tourney, making their last visit in 2010. Michigan opened that tournament with a win over No. 13-ranked San Diego State before dropping matches to No. 3 UCLA (7-5), No. 8 Arizona State (11-6), and No. 10 San Jose State (10-3).
Out of a roster of 24 members on Michigan's water polo team, 15 hail from the state of California. The roster includes California natives: senior -- goalkeeper Morgan Turner (Mission Vejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills); juniors -- driver Natalie Naruns (Los Altos, Calif. /St. Francis), two-meter Lauren Colton (Mission Vejo, Calif./St. Francis), attacker Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista), and goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado); sophomores -- driver Katie Hazelrigg (Rolling Hills, Calif./Chadwick), two-meter defender Katy Feaver (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's), two-meter Laura Milstead (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa), driver Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame), attacker Hathaway Moore (Atherton, Calif./Saint Francis), and attacker Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland); freshmen -- driver Emily Parsons (Portola Valley, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), two-meter Lauren Nadel (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica), driver Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad), attacker Lauren Thatcher (Canyon Lake, Calif./Temescal Canyon).
After a five-point performance during the Wolverines' last outing, Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) reached 150 career points. She hit the milestone when she registered one goal in the match-up against UCLA on Feb. 2.
Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) recorded her 50th career point during Michigan's 7-5 win over UC Davis on Feb. 2. On the season Pratt registered her first career hat trick during the Michigan Kick-Off to open the season.
Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) leads the Wolverines with 20 goals and is the Maize and Blue's co-leader in assists with nine. Golden also leads the Wolverines in points with 29.
Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista), Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame), Lauren Colton (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro) have posted hat tricks this season. Golden recorded two during the Stanford Invitational, moving her career count to five. Colton posted her second career hat trick after a five-goal performance against Santa Clara, while Pratt tallied her first during the Michigan Kick-Off to open the season.
GOLDEN, NOLAN, and WILLIAMS RECEIVE CWPA HONORS
Attackers Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista), Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) and Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) of the 12th-ranked University of Michigan water polo team received weekly honors for their performances over the weekend, the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced Feb. 7.
Morgan Turner needs 21 blocks to reach 300 for her career and four more steals for 50.
Alex Adamson is eight wins shy of 50 for her career.
Kiki Golden is two scores from 100 career goals.
Hathaway Moore is five points shy of 50 for her career.
Lauren Colton needs one goal to reach 100.
