BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Freshman goalkeeper Emily Browning (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro HS) of the University of Michigan water polo team was named the CWPA Western Division Rookie of the Week in recognition of her play at the Fluid Four, the league office announced Wednesday (Feb. 26).
Browning posted 17 saves through two complete-game performances at the Fluid Four (Feb. 22), including nine in the Wolverines' opening win against No. 19 Cal Baptist. Browning held the Lancers to just six goals.
Browning has earned the bulk of time in the Wolverine net, appearing in 10 games, and owns 68 saves on the season as well as five assists and four steals. She was the Wolverines' first rookie goalkeeper to start a season opener since Olympian Betsey Armstrong (2002-05).
Browning is the second Wolverine player to garner the CWPA's weekly rookie honor, joining freshman Allison Skaggs (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro HS), who claimed the season's first accolade after posting three goals, two assists and four steals at the season-opening Michigan Kick-Off (Jan. 18).
The Wolverines will head back to the West Coast this weekend for a four-game slate at the Cal Lutheran Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif. On Friday (Feb. 28), U-M will face UC Santa Barbara (10:30 a.m. PST) and Azusa Pacific (3:30 p.m.) before wrapping up with Saturday (March 1) games against Whittier (1 p.m.) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2:15 p.m.). All Michigan games will be played at the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
