BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Junior Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and sophomore Presley Pender (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) of the University of Michigan water polo team earned CWPA Western Division Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Wednesday (March 19). Williams was named Player of the Week, while Pender earned the defensive award.
Williams posted five goals over the perfect Wolverine Invitational appearance last weekend (March 15-16), including a hat trick in U-M's marquee overtime win against Pacific. Williams tallied two goals in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter and completed a hat trick -- her first of the season -- with a goal late in the first overtime frame. She also assisted on U-M's other overtime tally and scored two goals in the tournament opener against Gannon.
Pender posted a team-leading six steals at the Wolverine Invitational, contributing to a defensive effort that allowed just 4.2 goals per game. She also drew a five-meter penalty and recorded a pair of field blocks. Pender also had a big weekend on the offensive side, registering eight goals, including a career-best four against Siena.
Michigan will take a week hiatus before hosting rival Indiana on Saturday, March 29. The game, U-M's third against the Hoosiers this season, is slated for a noon start Canham Natatorium. Admission is free.
