ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) and sophomore Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland), attackers on the 13th-ranked University of Michigan water polo team, shared the CWPA Western Division Player of the Week award. Golden also was named Defensive Player of the Week as it was announced Tuesday (April 17) by the league office.
The pair helped power Michigan to three wins over the weekend en route to its 11th consecutive CWPA division title. The Wolverines entered the championship as the No. 3 seed and notched wins against No. 6 seed Notre Dame (Ohio) (20-4), No. 2 seed Indiana (10-7) and No. 4 seed Hartwick (7-6) in Bloomington, Ind.
Golden's production on offense included six goals and three assists, and she led U-M's defense with 10 steals and two field blocks. Golden registered two goals, two steals and one assist against Notre Dame before finishing with five steals against Indiana.
She spotlighted the championship game with her performance against Hartwick with an acrobatic goal in the fourth quarter that was the deciding factor as U-M claimed its ninth straight Western Division crown. She finished with a hat trick as a result of four goals on six attempts and tacked on three steals.
Nolan recorded seven goals and seven assists over the three-game stretch. After finishing with one goal, two steals and three assists against Notre Dame, she orchestrated U-M's comeback efforts in the semifinal-round victory over Indiana. Trailing 6-3, the Wolverines closed out the game against their rivals with a 7-1 run spearheaded by Nolan's four goals. In the championship game against Hartwick, she managed one goal and dished out three assists, including the one that led to Golden's game-winning score.
It marks the second CWPA Player of the Week award this season for Golden, who also received the honor on Feb. 7, and the third of her career. She has three CWPA Western Division Defensive Player of the Week awards, having won it twice last year. She was also named top rookie three times during her freshman year in 2010.
Nolan lands her third CWPA weekly accolade of her career. She was named Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 7 and earned Rookie of the Week last season.
As a result of its Western Division title, U-M earned the No. 1 seed in next week's CWPA Eastern Championship. The event will be held Friday through Sunday (April 27-29) at the newly built Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on the campus of Brown University in Providence, R.I.
