April 26, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) of the University of Michigan water polo team was voted the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Player of the Year on Thursday (April 26) during the league's annual awards banquet.

She joins Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) and Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) on the CWPA All-Western Division first team, giving the Maize and Blue a league-best three players on the this year's all-division squad.

Stacking up her career honors, Golden receives her first Player of the Year award and was named to the first team for a consecutive season. She leads the Wolverines in points (93), goals (60) and assists (33). Golden now has 231 career points and ranks eighth all-time in the category, while her 93 points on the campaign sit seventh on the single-season list.

Colton and Nolan receive first-team recognition for the first time in their careers. Colton, who is second on the team in goals (39) and ranks third in points (56), was named to the all-division second team last year. Nolan grabs first-team honors after ranking second on the team in points (62) and assists (28) so far in 2012.

Voted on by the head coaches in the division, the all-division team comprises the best players based on nominations from the coaches, combined with a review of each player's performance during the 2012 regular and divisional championship seasons.

It is the first time the Wolverines placed three players on the all-division first team after placing Leah Robertson, Lauren Orth, Alison Mantel and goalie Alex Adamson (Coronando, Calif./Coronado) on the 2010 CWPA All-Western Division first team.

The No. 1 seed Wolverines, with a first-round bye, will begin their march for a sixth CWPA Eastern Championship title and an at-large-bid to the NCAA Water Polo Championship when they face the winner of No. 8 seed Bucknell and No. 9 seed George Washington. Michigan will face the winner on Friday (April 27) at 3:40 p.m. inside Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on the campus of Brown University in Providence, R.I.
