Armstrong Helps Team USA Capture Gold at World League Super Final

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan water polo goalie Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) posted 15 blocks to help Team USA defeat Australia, 6-4, for the gold medal in the FINA World League Super Final on Sunday (June 3) in Changshu, China.

Team USA has now claimed four consecutive gold medals at the FINA World League Super Finals.

For the tournament, Armstrong registered 44 saves. She recorded nine saves as Team USA opened play with a 10-6 victory over China. She then made 11 stops in the 8-4 win over Greece before sitting out the 17-3 win over Germany to close out group play.

To advance to the semifinals, Armstrong shared time in the cage, adding two saves when USA routed Italy, 15-2. In a rematch against Greece, she made seven blocks in a 7-6 triumph to help USA move on to the final round against Australia.

Team USA will continue to compete before the start of the Olympic Games in London, England.

Next up for Team USA will be a four-game exhibition series with Hungary in California. The series starts on July 2 at Stanford University and will wrap on July 8 at Corona del Mar High School in a nationally televised game on NBC Sports Network. The teams will also play on July 4 at the USA Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos, Calif., and at a location to be determined on July 6.
