BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Nine members of the University of Michigan water polo team were honored by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches as recipients of 2013 All-Academic awards, the ACWPC announced Tuesday (July 23).
Freshman Kelly Martin (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) earned the highest honor, achieving "outstanding" status for carrying a cumulative grade-point average between 3.71 and 4.00. Martin played all 34 games in her rookie campaign, boasting 13 goals, 10 assists and 23 steals. She is enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.
Four Wolverines -- freshman Ali Thomason (San Rafael, Calif./Marin Catholic HS), junior Sophie Høegh (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades HS), senior Natalie Naruns (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) and junior captain Hathaway Moore (Atherton, Calif./St. Francis HS) garnered superior recognition with GPAs between 3.41 and 3.70, while freshman Gabriella Serure (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades HS), sophomore Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS), freshman Presley Pender (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) and senior Katie Hazelrigg (Rolling Hills, Calif./Chadwick HS) earned excellent recognition with GPAs between 3.20 and 3.40.
Høegh and Williams both garnered repeat recognition by the ACWPC. Høegh is a three-time All-Academic honoree, while Williams earned the distinction for the second consecutive year.
A student-athlete must be an active participant on the team that competed in at least 50 percent of the games during the current season in order to be eligible for the All-Academic Team recognition.
