The Michigan water polo program welcomed a class of eight freshmen this fall. After three months together and with the first semester starting to wind down, they are thoroughly settled into their new lives in Ann Arbor. Learn more about the Wolverine freshmen, how they got to Michigan and what they bring in and out of the water.

EMILY BROWNING
Goalkeeper
Lake Forest, Calif.

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"I had never imagined a school with such a big tradition, and it was something that I wanted to be a part of. I also wanted to venture out of California, and I think Michigan was the perfect option for that. Michigan is also both strong in academics and athletics and that was important to me."

How did you first get involved in water polo?
"My sisters got involved with it and convinced me to try it out when I was nine."

How has it been getting to know your Wolverine teammates?
"Great! Our team is very diverse, and I can't wait to get to know everyone even more during season. They've already been very welcoming and they are all very sweet."

What do you like about Michigan/Ann Arbor from what you've seen so far?
"It is completely different from what I had expected when I first came to visit. I love being out here in the Midwest because we get all four seasons. I love the college town atmosphere and how there is always something going on. And although it may be easily distracting, there's no way you can be bored while living here in Ann Arbor."

How did you first get involved in water polo?
"My dad played water polo at UC Berkeley and encouraged my brother, sister and I to try it. Of course after I saw my older brother playing, I had to play too. I started playing and gradually started focusing solely on water polo in middle school."

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"Michigan has an extremely passionate and enthusiastic alumni and student population. The pride that people have in this amazing school is one of a kind, and cannot be duplicated. Being a part of Michigan history and tradition is an honor, and it's a blessing to have the support and motivation from our fellow students and alumni."

How did you first get involved in water polo?
"Katie Card taught me how to first play water polo. My sister was a very competitive swimmer up until the end of high school, when she decided she would try water polo her senior year. Then my brother tried it too and immediately fell in love. They both finally convinced me in seventh grade to go to a Great Lakes Water Polo practice. I was extremely reluctant at first and was convinced the sport was way too hard for me. But once I got in the water, and I immediately fell in love with the sport."

How has it been getting to know your Wolverine teammates?
"My teammates are great. They impress me every day during practice with what they can do, and they show a great deal of commitment to their sport. Everyone is very supportive of each other and cares for one another. The older girls are such great role models to have, and I wouldn't trade my team for the world."

ALLISON SKAGGS
Two-Meter
Lake Forest, Calif.

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"I wanted to get out of California and experience a new town in a different part of the country. When I came to Michigan for the first time I fell in love with it. The atmosphere on game days and the insane school spirit made me realize how fortunate I would be to attend this school. Michigan provides the perfect balance between excellent academics and intense athletics, which is exactly what I was looking for in a college. I knew that Michigan would be the ultimate college experience where I could succeed both academically and athletically."

How did you first get involved in water polo?
"I had been in swimming since I was five and was ready for something new. At age ten, I began playing water polo and fell in love with it. My first real coach was a former Navy Seal and scared the living daylights out of me, but I loved playing the game. I found water polo a lot more exciting than swimming, so I stuck with it!"

How has it been getting to know your Wolverine teammates?
"It has been amazing! They are all so welcoming and helpful. I couldn't have asked for better teammates!"

What do you like about Michigan/Ann Arbor from what you've seen so far?
"I love the energy and camaraderie in this town. Ann Arbor is filled with school spirit and genuine love for the school. I love walking down State Street because it has a city-like vibe. Also, I enjoy walking through the Arb and of course the colors of fall. I never was able to experience four seasons in California, so it is a beautiful surprise!"

What do you enjoy when you're not playing water polo?
"I love to spend time with my friends and family. Also, go to the beach (without entering the water because I am terrified of marine life) and take nice long naps."
