EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior Danielle Tauro (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional HS) paced the University of Michigan women's cross country team for the second time in as many meets this season, claiming runner-up honors at the non-scoring Spartan Invitational on Friday afternoon (Sept. 18) at Michigan State's Forest Akers East Golf Course. The Wolverines placed three among the top-10 individual finishers.

Six members of the U-M contingent made their 6,000-meter debut in today's race, including three of Michigan's top-five placers, who finished within a 77-second window. Junior/sophomore Kaitlyn Peale (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington HS), freshman Kaitlyn Patterson (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) and freshman Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven HS) placed seventh, ninth and 12th, respectively. Sophomore Mary Grace Pellegrini (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manuel HS) rounded out the Wolverines' top five in 24th place and a career-best 22:36.

The Wolverines ran together near the front through the opening mile, but the race's initial pace quickly created separation and several packs in the field as runners dropped off. With things already considerably strung out, eventual winner Emily MacLeod of Michigan State accelerated at the 4,000-meter mark -- with Tauro on her heels -- as the pair pulled away from the rest of the field. The Wolverine junior did not maintain the closing pace but used her kick to finish strong and cross the line at 21:19 -- 12 seconds behind MacLeod.

Rounding out the U-M participants were freshman Lindsey Hilton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams HS), senior/junior Rachel Severin (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS), sophomore/freshman Kourtney Moody (Las Vegas, Nev./Spring Valley HS) and sophomore/freshman Lindsay Hagan (Novi, Mich./Northville HS), who finished 30th, 33rd, 55th and 72nd, respectively.

The Wolverines will continue the 2009 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis. Hosted by the University of Wisconsin, the women's 5,000-meter race is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. CDT start at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.

Q U O T E S

Michigan Head Coach Mike McGuire
On the team's performance ... "I thought we were pretty solid. We had a couple -- Jenny Morgan and Jillian Smith -- drop out today, not for anything major. Put those two in where I think they would finish, and we would obviously be better. But this is what we did today, and I think there's room for improvement. Just about everyone was competing in their first 6K, and of course there is a little adjustment, but nobody was spent by that extra kilometer. So, we'll just continue to improve from here, but, all in all, it was a pretty solid effort."
