ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team, which won the Big Ten and Great Lakes Region championships and finished fifth at the NCAA Championships, was selected as the recipient of the inaugural BASF Team Chemistry MVP Award. As the team of the month for November, the team will be recognized for their accomplishments at the men's basketball game tonight (Jan. 9) vs. Nebraska at 7 p.m. inside Crisler Center.

BASF, the Chemical Company, is now proud to be a partner of University of Michigan Athletics. As a result of this new partnership, BASF will recognize one group in the athletic department from across all sports each month that represents the best qualities of team chemistry and its importance both on and off the field.

Led by 21st-year head coach Mike McGuire, the program experienced its most successful season in six years. The Wolverines won the Big Ten Championship, captured their second straight NCAA Great Lakes Regional title, and capped the season with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

McGuire was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the ninth time in his career and earned Great Lakes Coach of the Year honors for the for the seventh time. Freshman Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) became the second straight Wolverine to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year, following junior/sophomore Taylor Pogue (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich) in 2011.

At the Big Ten meet, four runners earned All-Big Ten honors. Senior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) ran her way onto the conference first team, while fifth-year senior Amanda Eccleston (Adrian, Mich./[Tecumseh), Osika and senior Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) each earned a spot on the second team.

Addison, Osika and Smith also went on to earn All-Great Lakes Region accolades, along with sophomore Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and senior Lindsey Hilton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams).

The Wolverines also found success off the course this season, as 10 members of the team received Academic All-Big Ten honors for carrying at least a 3.0 grade-point average as a varsity letterwinner.
