Phelan's NACAC Junior Cross Country Title Boosts Canada to Victory

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago -- Freshman Jaimie Phelan (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) of the University of Michigan women's track and field and cross country teams won gold at the North America, Central American & Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday (Feb. 22).

Led by Phelan's win, Team Canada completed the sweep of the medal positions to claim the team title in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Phelan clocked a winning time of 13:38.93 in the junior 4K race, while teammates Jillian Forsey (13:39.91) and Claire Smith (13:43.27) followed closely behind to secure silver and bronze, respectively. The fourth and fifth runners for Team Canada came across the line in 10th and 11th place to complete the team victory.

Phelan finished third at the Canadian National Cross Country Championships on Nov. 30, 2013, to qualify for her first appearance at the NACAC Championships.
