PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago -- University of Michigan women's cross country freshman Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) led Team USA to the overall team title in the junior 4k with her first-place finish at the North America, Central American, & Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday (March 17). Fellow freshman Ellen Junewick (Grand Rapids, Mich. (Forest Hills Eastern) joined Osika on the squad and finished 10th.
Osika was the first of four consecutive USA runners to cross the finish line, in a time of 13:40.40, while Junewick clocked a 4k time of 14:47.32 to take 10th. Team USA's 1-2-3-4 finish earned a perfect 10 points to secure the team title. The squad finished 27 points ahead of second-place Canada. Mexico (44), Puerto Rico (52) and Jamaica (67) secured the final three spots.
Osika and Junewick finished first and fourth, respectively, at the 2012 USA Cross Country Championships in St. Louis, Mo., on Feb. 11 to earn their spots on Team USA.
