ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's cross country head coach Mike McGuire announced Thursday (Aug. 29) that junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and senior/junior Taylor Pogue (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich) will serve as team captains for the 2013 season. The pair was chosen this week at preseason camp in Pellston, Mich., and will each serve as captains for the first time in their careers.

"Brook and Taylor have excelled across the board in the time they have been at Michigan; athletically, academically and socially within the team," said McGuire. "They have really evolved into great leaders. They are obviously outstanding runners, but I also feel our team is in good hands with those two individuals as our primary leaders. They are an extension of what I feel are the important values for the team and I know they will continue to lead this team in a positive direction."

Handler and Pogue helped the Wolverines win the program's ninth Big Ten title a year ago. Handler was also a member of U-M's squad that won its second straight NCAA Great Lakes Region title and advanced to the NCAA Championships, where it placed fifth -- their best finish since 2006. Handler earned All-Great Lakes Region accolades, placing ninth at the regional meet. Pogue missed the 2012 regional and national meets due to injury, but was an All-Big Ten second team and All-Great Lakes Region honoree in 2011.

"In addition to Brook and Taylor being our designated leaders, we will also have other upperclassmen that will compliment what those two bring to this team," McGuire added. "I feel that we have great dynamics within our team, and obviously our two leaders are part of that, but our returning athletes, as a whole, did a great job of welcoming our 11 freshmen to camp. I'm excited about how we came out of camp; as much from a team-dynamic standpoint as a training standpoint."

The Wolverines will begin the 2013 season by hosting the Michigan Open on Friday (Aug. 30) at 10:30 a.m. at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich. Purdue will join the Wolverines for the 5,000-meter non-scoring event.
