Preview: Michigan Open (Aug. 31)
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's cross country head coach Mike McGuire announced Thursday (Aug. 30) that Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven), Lindsey Hilton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) and Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) will serve as team captains for the 2012 season. The trio was voted on by their teammates at preseason camp in Pellston, Mich.
"I feel all three of our captains have done a great job both on and off the course in the three-plus years that they've been here," said McGuire. "I think they'll be a great extension of our coaching staff and be exceptional leaders and role models for a large group of women that will be working with them and looking to them for leadership."
Addison and Smith were selected as captains for the second straight year, while Hilton was chosen for the first time. All three were members of Michigan's Big Ten squad a year ago, leading U-M to a runner-up conference finish. Addison and Smith also helped the Wolverines to a Great Lakes Regional title and 15th-place place finish at the NCAA Championships, while Hilton missed the final two meets of the season due to injury.
Addison earned All-Big Ten first team honors, while Smith landed a spot on the second team, and both were named to the All-Great Lakes Region team. The trio has appeared on the Academic All-Big Ten list in each of the last two years.
"Jill and Becca have been mainstays in the lineup and Lindsey has been a great support person on the team at the six-seven slot. I think they recognize that Lindsey has a tremendous amount of determination and that she's a great competitor. Each have similar qualities, but they all have some individual qualities that collectively add up to what I feel is an outstanding group of leaders of our team."
The Wolverines will begin the 2012 season by hosting the Michigan Open on Friday (Aug. 31) at 2:30 p.m. at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich. [ Event Preview ]
