ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) of the first-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 2).
Osika earned her third consecutive Michigan Open title last weekend, winning the year's season-opening event with a collegiate-best 5K time of 17:01.5. Osika led the way for the Wolverines in the non-scoring event, edging out teammate Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) for the crown to give her a trio of first-place finishes in the event during her time in Ann Arbor.
This marks the first weekly award for a U-M harrier since Osika earned the honor on Sept. 3, 2013, after last season's Michigan Open, meaning she has now been given the honor twice in her career at U-M.
The Wolverines will take two weeks off from competition before traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Black and Gold Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20. The meet will give the team a preview look of the Big Ten Championship course, as the Hawkeyes will be hosting the event on Sunday, Nov. 2.
