ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) of the 17th-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 3).
Osika defended her Michigan Open title from 2012, winning this year's season-opening event with a collegiate-best 5K time of 17:44.09. She spearheaded a 1-2-3 finish by the Wolverines in the non-scoring race that also featured Big Ten opponent Purdue.
This marks the first weekly honor of Osika's career and the first for Michigan since junior/sophomore Anna Pasternak (Brighton, Mich./Hartland) earned the recognition on Oct. 23, 2012.
The Wolverines will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Purdue Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13. The meet will serve as a preview of the Big Ten Championship course, which will be hosted by the Boilermakers on Sunday, Nov. 3.
