VANCOUVER, B.C -- Freshman Jaimie Phelan (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's) of the University of Michigan women's cross country team took third place at the Canadian National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 30, to earn a spot on Team Canada for the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships, which will take place on Feb. 22, 2014 in Trinidad & Tobago.
The junior women's 5K race was contested at Jericho Beach Park in Vancouver, B.C., in rainy and muddy conditions. Phelan got out well and remained with the lead back for the first half of the race, when eventual champion Heather Petrick made a move that stretched out the pack. Phelan was able to hold onto her position and fight off a late challenger to secure third place.
Phelan will make her first appearance at the NACAC Championships, which will be held on Feb. 22, 2014, when she represents the Canadian Junior National Team.
