Victors Club: FAQ -- Preferred Seating Program

• Other FAQs: Priority Point Program | Other Questions

What is a Preferred Seating Program?
Preferred Seating Programs are common in intercollegiate athletics and enhance the annual support provided to student-athletes. A select number of season ticket locations are identified as preferred seating, and season ticket holders in those areas are required to make a minimum annual contribution in order to maintain their preferred location.

Why is this program important?
Nineteen of the 20 schools leading Division I-A football attendance have annual giving programs that include a preferred seating plan in their stadiums. Michigan has been the only exception. These annual giving programs deliver an invaluable level of support by providing the resources necessary to strive for athletic excellence. If we expect to compete, U-M student-athletes need the support generated by this important program.

Why are we implementing a Preferred Seating Program?
We have delayed a universal practice of our peer institutions but the increasing cost of tuition and the need to update our aging physical plant necessitate it if we want to continue Michigan's rich tradition of athletic excellence.

Will the PSD be required beyond 2006?
Yes. The PSD is an annual contribution and will be necessary for your season ticket renewal each year. Also, the donation levels may be revised to address the future needs of the Athletic Department.

How will I be notified of the specific PSD for the renewal of my football season tickets?
For each football season, the Victors Club will send a renewal solicitation in November with a donation completion deadline of January the following year.

How many seats in Michigan Stadium have been identified as preferred locations?
Less than 33,000 seats in Michigan Stadium will be considered preferred locations and require an annual contribution plus the purchase of the season ticket to guarantee the renewal for each football season. This represents about 31% of the stadium's seating capacity.

Will this program be utilized in other season-ticketed sports?
In the future, it is likely that this program will be adopted in other season-ticketed sports.

Is the PSD tax deductible?
Yes. The IRS has ruled that gifts for preferential seating are 80% deductible. Please consult your tax advisor for more information

Can I designate the sport or project that my PSD supports?
No. Your PSD must be an unrestricted contribution to Michigan Athletics. The funds generated by this annual giving program will be used to defer the cost of education for all U-M student-athletes and to improve Michigan's aging athletic campus.

Is the contribution for preferred seating considered a Victors Club donation?
Yes. The PSD is considered a Victors Club donation. Your gift establishes your participation in the Victors Club and will provide benefits and recognition at your level of support.

Can a capital, endowment, or booster club contribution be used for my PSD?
No. These gifts are designated contributions that support specific programs and initiatives. The goal of the Preferred Seating Program is to create a robust annual giving initiative that can supplement the Athletic Department's operating needs.
