ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 20 Indiana (23-25, 17-25, 19-25) on Friday night (Oct. 10) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (11-5, 1-4 Big Ten) was led by Allison Jacobs' 12 kills and Morgan Burke's 13 assists. Serena Nyambio led both teams with six blocks, while Maddi Cuchran added eight digs. Indiana (14-1, 5-0 Big Ten) was paced by Candela Alonso-Corcelles and Jaidyn Jager, who each recorded a match-high 15 kills, and setter Teodora Krickovic, who tallied 35 assists.
Back-to-back Michigan kills knotted the first set at 2-2, with neither team gaining much separation as the score stayed within two points throughout. A kill from Jacobs put U-M up 17-16 before Indiana tied it again at 17-all coming out of a timeout. After a pair of Hoosier service errors leveled the score at 23-23, consecutive kills closed out the set for Indiana. Nyambio was solid with four kills and three blocks to lead Michigan. IU hit .382 while the Maize and Blue hit .257.
The teams stayed close again to open the second set, tying it 8-8 after an ace from Nyambio. The Hoosiers then rattled off five straight points, their longest run of the night, before a kill from Jenna Hanes brought Michigan within four at 13-9. Indiana built a 22-15 advantage -- its largest of the match -- before a block from Nyambio and Ella Demetrician stopped a 3-0 run, but the Hoosier attack proved too strong as IU took the set 25-17. Michigan hit .103 to Indiana's .312.
U-M opened the third set with a 4-1 lead on a kill from Nyambio, but Indiana responded to tie it at 5-5 and later pulled ahead 14-12 with a pair of aces. The Hoosiers extended their lead with a 7-2 run to make it 21-14, and although Michigan answered with a brief 5-4 surge, it couldn't overcome the deficit. Indiana sealed the match with a 25-19 third-set win. U-M posted its best hitting percentage of the night in the final frame at .304 behind five kills from Jacobs, but IU again outpaced Michigan at .414.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday (Oct. 11) against Iowa at Cliff Keen Arena. First serve is set for 7 p.m., and the match will stream live on B1G+.
