
Four Wolverines Earn All-Big Ten Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Four University of Michigan men's lacrosse student-athletes were named to All-Big Ten teams, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon (April 22).
Junior Rowan Clay earned First Team All-Big Ten honors for the first time in his career, while junior Nick Roode was named to the second team. Luke Shannehan and Adam Udell were both unanimous selections to the All-Freshman Team.
Additionally, Jack Welcsh was named Michigan's Sportsmanship Award honoree after appearing in four games this season.
Clay anchored the Michigan defense, appearing in all 13 games and leading the team with 21 caused turnovers to go along with 28 ground balls. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native recorded nine games with two or more caused turnovers, including four against Rutgers and three at Notre Dame, and picked up seven ground balls at Notre Dame. Clay ranks third in the Big Ten in caused turnovers and 20th in ground balls.
Roode started all 13 games for Michigan and posted a team-best 37 points, including a team-high 32 goals. The junior attacker added five assists and 17 ground balls. The Peterborough, Ontario, native recorded 11 multi-point games and posted a point in 12 straight contests. Roode registered back-to-back five-point games against Marquette and Detroit Mercy and scored four goals against Penn State in Michigan's last-second win.
Shannehan made an immediate impact in his first season, starting all 13 games and ranking second on the team with 35 points and 25 goals. The Fairfield, Conn., native was a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree after opening his collegiate career with seven points, including five goals, against Mercyhurst and scoring the game-winning goal in the final 12 seconds against Penn State. Shannehan recorded eight multi-point games, including two five-goal performances.
Udell made 11 starts in his first season with the Wolverines and totaled 22 points to rank fourth on the team. The freshman attacker recorded 11 goals and 11 assists, highlighted by a six-point outing at Ohio State that included a career-high five goals. He also recorded his first career hat trick against Johns Hopkins.
The honorees and the rest of the Michigan squad earned the No. 5 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will take on No. 4 seed Ohio State on Saturday (April 25) at noon in a Big Ten Quarterfinal matchup in Columbus. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
