MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Michigan baseball team pounded out 16 hits and benefited from 12 walks as the Wolverines powered past Florida International University on Saturday (Feb. 26) by a score of 16-8 at the FIU Baseball Stadium.
In the top of the first inning, Michigan (4-2) jumped out to a five-run lead as Ted Burton delivered a three-run double in the frame. FIU (6-1) scratched for a run back in the bottom of the frame.
Michigan loaded the bases with no outs in the second but couldn't push anything across and FIU again managed some two-out magic in the bottom of the frame as a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Alex Sanchez made it a 5-3 game.
Clark Elliott delivered a two-run double and Joe Stewart followed with a two-run single in the third as U-M reclaimed a big lead, 9-3.
Michigan nudged its lead to 10-4 as the Wolverines loaded the bases in four of the first five innings, but FIU kept battling and chased Jacob Denner (1-0) from the game in the fourth with two runners on base and no outs in a 10-6 game. Walker Cleveland (1-0) entered and allowed another run to score but avoided further trouble to earn the win in relief.
Stewart helped to restore order in the fifth when he launched a two-run homer off the netting in left field and forced a pitching change en route to a 14-7 lead following the frame.
Stewart's four hits led the way offensively, while Elliott, Tito Flores, Burton, Alex Fedje-Johnson and Jack Van Remortel had two hits apiece. Casey Buckley added his first career home run in the ninth.
Chase Allen was superb in relief as the sophomore righty struck out four and scattered three hits in 4.0 innings of work in which he allowed just one run.
On Sunday (Feb. 27), Michigan returns to action for the final game at FIU Baseball Stadium in a 6 p.m. game against the Panthers, who are set to play earlier in the day against Seton Hall.
